Snowmobiler crashes, hurt
A local man driving his snowmobile west of River Falls was thrown from his machine and hurt Saturday night. He was later taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said the crash victim, Gary Moelter, 53, 444 County Road M, sustained lacerations and complained of head and back pain.
Hillstead said Moelter, operating a 2000 Polaris XC 700 snowmobile, was apparently heading south on in a private field off Carlson Lane in the vicinity of County Road MM.
Moelter went into a steep gully. As he came up and hit the gully's crest his snowmobile went airborne. When it landed, Moelter was thrown. His snowmobile kept going south for another 200 yards.
The St. Croix Sheriff's Department was called to the scene at 7:45 p.m. Hillstead said Moelter was conscious.
River Falls First Responders, Ambulance and Fire Departments also responded. Hillstead said they made use of a "Rescue Sled" from the Roberts Ambulance.
Hillstead said the incident has been turned over to the state's Department of Natural Resources for further investigation.
A spokeswoman at Regions said Moelter was still hospitalized and in fair condition.
