The school board and its superintendent advisory committee interviewed seven candidates for the job of school superintendent. School Board president Stacy Johnson Myers said three finalists have been picked: Barry Cain, Ellsworth Community School District superintendent; Donald Haack, Spooner Area School District; and James Benson, River Valley School District in Spring Green.

Cain is also the former principal at Meyer Middle School before being named Ellsworth High School principal and later that district's superintendent.

Johnson Myers said the three will return for second-round interviews. As part of this process, there will be public forums for the candidates on Monday, April 29.

The school board will finalize the schedule for the interviews and forums early next week.

The search for a new superintendent was begun in January after current superintendent Tom Westerhaus announced his retirement at the end of the current school year.
