River Falls issues utility scam alert

City Hall officials have been notified by some customers that they received a call from River Falls Municipal Utilities saying they were due for disconnection and needed to make a payment with a payment service in order to avoid disconnection.

Customers were also asked to give their Social Security number and bank account information. According to City Hall spokeswoman Dawn Wills, these calls are not from River Falls Municipal Utilities and are clearly an effort to conduct a "phishing" scam by randomly contacting individuals. The phony calls were reported to the River Falls Police Department.

Said Wills: “If you receive a call regarding your account stating your account is past due and telling you to pay over the phone, hang up and call our office at 715-425-0906. Please do not give any personal information out over the phone
