River Falls events (March 4)
Volunteers are sought to help unload and stock Second Harvest delivery items for the River Falls Food Pantry on the second Thursday of each month at 8:45 a.m., located at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, 202 S. Second St. There is no need to call or register to donate time. Persons interested should bring a two-wheel dolly if they own one.
Spaghetti served,brunch offered
A benefit for Haitian earthquake victims will be held in the form of a spaghetti feed from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at the Moose Lodge, 620 N. Clark St. Cost is $6 per person.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 7, the Good Samaritans Club will host a brunch with proceeds going to local charities, also at the Moose Lodge. The cost is $7 per person; children five years old and younger eat free.
The brunch menu includes: Pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, potatoes, coffee, juice and milk. The public is invited to both fundraisers. For more information, call Greg Thompson at 715-247-3962 or Jim Vorwald at 715-248-7913.
Library lists events
Ninette Nolan will present a look at low cost recreational opportunities in St. Croix County from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at the River Falls Public Library. Nolan's free program is aimed at seniors.
A program on how handmade quilts may have played a significant role in helping black slaves escape their masters, "Hidden in Plain View: Quilts as signposts in the Underground Railroad," will be presented by quilter and UW-River Falls elementary education major Darcy Thompson beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6. Thompson will talk about how the bed coverings guided the travels of black slaves leaving Southern plantations and heading for safety in Canada along the Underground Railroad, a linked series of safe havens set up to shelter escapees from the law and bounty hunters. Both programs are free. Refreshments will be served.
The 2010 Quilt Show will continue through Sunday, March 14.
The UW-RF Falcon Fellows and the library will co-sponsor a program to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6. Games, treats, crafts, stories and an appearance by The Cat in the Hat will be offered to children in preschool through grade 3 and their families.
