Melissa Christofferson, 34, 372 Elm St. S., received the following citations: three for animals at large, five for failure to license dog, five for unlawful keeping of a pit bull and/or dangerous dog and four for failure to prove rabies vaccination. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance in Prescott Municipal Court at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.

According to police reports, three American Staffordshire terrier-type dogs allegedly escaped from Christofferson's house March 11 and attacked "Freyja," an eight-year-old Schnauzer belonging to James and Christine Peterson, 370 Locust St.

Freyja was seriously injured; her life was in question hours after the accident. Her condition has improved since Christine Peterson said Monday all of her stitches and drainage tubes have been taken out.

"She's progressing really well," Peterson said. "She's eating well and getting her personality back with each day."

Peterson explained Freyja still wants to go outdoors, but based on the attack, can't go out without supervision.

Investigator Rob Funk said Christofferson was served with a legal notice and the three dogs were quarantined from March 16-26. Each citation has a value of $82.50, meaning Christofferson is looking at a total of about $1,400.

Last month's incident wasn't the first time Christofferson's dogs have caught the attention of law enforcement. In January, police were called for dogs at large believed to be hers. She received a warning for them being at large and for failure to license them.
