A squirrel tripping a power line is believed to have been the cause of the power outage that affected most of Ellsworth Tuesday afternoon.
An Xcel Energy customer spokesperson said power went out in most businesses and homes serviced by Xcel Energy around 2:30 p.m., except those serviced by Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services and the county buildings, which used backup generators. Power was back on shortly after 4 p.m.
Ellsworth schools were let out a bit early after the warning lights came on.
The spokesperson also said around 1,400 customers were affected and Ellsworth was the only reported outage area.
