High school senior Karlie Place committed to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and classmate Trent Powell gave his commitment to Colorado State University in a ceremony at River Falls High School Monday morning.
Place will head to UW-Milwaukee to compete in track and field while Powell will run cross country at Colorado State.
Powell clocked the fastest time ever by a Wildcat runner on his way to a fourth place finish at the 2013 WIAA State Cross Country Championships in Wisconsin Rapids. A two-time state qualifier in both cross country and track and field, he won the 2013 Big Rivers Conference cross country championship and is the school record holder in the 5,000 meter race.
In track and field, Powell finished fifth in the 1600 meter run at the 2013 WIAA State Championships and is the Wildcat school record holder in both the indoor 1600 (4:22.25) and 3200 (9:44.71) meter races.
Place is a two-time state qualifier in the triple jump and long jump, finishing ninth in the long jump in 2012 and 12th in the triple jump in 2013. She holds the indoor school record in both events and is the outdoor record holder in the triple jump with a distance of 37-feet, 4-inches.
Place was the 2012 BRC champion in the long jump and the 2013 BRC champion in the triple jump. She was also a member of the Wildcats’ 2013 WIAA State championship gymnastics team and finished fifth in the vault in the state individual competition.
