Pierce Pepin closes appliance business
Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services announced its board of directors and management have determined it’s in the best interest of the cooperative and its members to close the appliance department, Pierce Pepin Appliance. This change was effective May 1.
Offering appliance sales for 73 years and providing appliance service since 1967, the decision to discontinue these services to the members and communities was difficult. However, the retail appliance market has changed, becoming more competitive in product offerings, pricing, marketing, advertising, and how consumers access and purchase appliances.
"The reality is that sales are not providing the revenue and gross margins to financially sustain the business long term," said Roger Wiff, board chairman. “This is strictly a decision based on the economics.”
"These decisions are especially difficult when employees are affected," said Larry Dokkestul, President and CEO. “The board and management are truly grateful to Michael J. Steele and his team. Mike, as the appliance and inventory manager, has been the face of the appliance business since March 1989.
His knowledge of the appliance industry, hard work and dedication to the appliance business and the cooperative are greatly appreciated. Mike should feel proud of all he has accomplished. We wish him the best.”
Steele’s last day with the cooperative was May 1.
Plans are underway to liquidate the appliance inventory. Watch for opportunities to purchase heavily discounted merchandise, keeping in mind this liquidation sale will last only as long as the stock is available. The appliance showroom will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., until the inventory is sold. The office and appliance showroom are closed Saturdays.
Appliance service will be available through this September to accommodate those members who rely on Pierce Pepin for appliance repairs.
Pierce Pepin will continue to sell and service electric water heaters and water softeners.
Appreciation goes to all who have supported the appliance business over the years.
