Some folks in Wisconsin Rapids want their School Board to do an about-face and put the "Red" back in the nickname Red Raiders.
The board dropped the word this month as the state keeps trying to get schools to dump their Indian nicknames and logos.
Now, some local businesses and a group on Facebook.com say hundreds of folks have signed petitions to make their Raiders red again.
They said the word does not have to pertain to Indians.
School Board President Sandy Hett is surprised that folks are fighting back.
She said opponents could have had their say beforehand at three public forums, but they were poorly attended.
Hett says the board might have to study the matter some more, but she could not say what the next move might be.
Lincoln High in Rapids dropped its Indian logo 14 years ago.
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster has tried for years to get Wisconsin schools to drop their Indian monikers.
A couple years ago, she said reluctant schools might force the Legislature to do it for them.
But the issue has stayed quiet at the Capitol since then.
