RIVER FALLS - A group of Cub Scouts and their leaders gave up dinner with their families Tuesday evening to keep an appointment at the River Falls Journal.

Three members of Den 457, Tiger Cubs who are all first-graders arrived at the 2815 Prairie Dr. office as promised at 5:30 p.m. for the brief tour.

Festivities began in the front office with a primer about community newspapering, provided by publisher Steve Dzubay.

Scouts learned that newspapers are private businesses, which earn their money by selling advertising as well as subscriptions and single copies of the newspaper itself.

The majority of the RFJ's readers live in and around River Falls but many copies of the weekly product are mailed each Wednesday to places as far away as Florida, California and Arizona. People can also subscribe to a full electronic version of the newspaper.

Cubs had a chance to see the newspaper's design area, its advertising and news offices and the newspaper "morgue", where past thousands of past issues are bound and stored.

The visitor list included Scouts John Swenson, Corbin Wild and Oliver Larson. Missing were Jack Rangaard and Beau Reed. The boys were accompanied by den leader Sara Swenson and assistant leader Amber Wild. Also visiting were John Wild and Angie Larson.
