The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., known for its protests at military funerals, announced plans to protest the performance of "The Laramie Project," about the 1988 murder of a gay college student in Wyoming. Counter-protestor carried signs about love and tolerance.

When the church didn't show up, the others hugged each other and broke into a chorus of the song, "We Are the Champions." Westboro did not explain why they were a no-show at the play in Neenah.

High school principal Colleen Doyle said she was encouraged by the strong support for a play that teaches about tolerance and encourages youngsters to speak out against hate crimes.
