Murder victim's kids receive security-company settlement

A security company has reached a settlement in a wrongful-death lawsuit over a failed burglar alarm. An ADT system did not work properly when Steven Van Keuren of River Falls barged into his ex-girlfriend's house in W. Lakeland, Minn. in 2006.

Van Keuren killed 38-year-old Teri Lee and 47-year-old Tim Hawkinson just weeks after Lee bought an ADT alarm to protect herself from Van Keuren.

He was convicted in 2007 of two counts of murder in the 1st degree and was sentenced to life in prison at a St. Cloud, Minn. correctional facility, with no possibility for release. The convict lived on Sunset Lane for several years and graduated River Falls High School in 1978.

No one's saying how much ADT paid Lee's four children as part of the settlement, but the family's lawyer called it substantial.
