The deadline for applications for the first University of Wisconsin-River Falls Willis H. Miller Memorial Scholarship is Jan. 8.

Miller, who died Nov. 16, 2008, at age 89, left nearly $1.1 million to UW-RF. It was the largest gift in the university's history.

The historic gift from the former publisher of the Hudson Star-Observer was used to establish endowed scholarships for students at UW-RF, with preference given to students from the Hudson and North Hudson area including the towns of Hudson, St. Joseph and Troy.

"We are extremely appreciative and thrilled for this historic legacy gift from the estate of Willis Miller. These scholarships will have a meaningful impact for the students of the greater Hudson community and the University for generations to come," said to Dan McGinty, interim executive director of the Office of University Advancement and UW-RF Foundation.

As an endowed scholarship fund, the interest earned on the Miller endowment is to be used to support annual scholarships, according to McGinty. Several $2,000 scholarships will be awarded.

"This scholarship is Willis Miller's legacy to the citizens of the Hudson area and to UW-RF. It is an ongoing reminder of his strong commitment to this region and the importance of higher education," said Alan Tuchtenhagen, Associate Chancellor for Enrollment Services.
