Turnout for the first meeting of the Meyer Middle School art club was surprised art teacher Kelyn King -- 45 students and one teacher showed up to participate!

King, who grew up in Hudson and taught at Hudson Prairie before starting at MMS this year, started the club for several reasons.

First, she wanted to prove to students that art is not just for 'cool, hipsters' but for everyone.

She was also hoping to give students a chance to focus less on the end product and more on the process they took to get the product.

King also saw a strong need in the community for middle school students to have someplace or something to do after school.

"Not all these kids are involved in sports," King added.

The last thing that she hopes is that the club helps kids see that art can make a difference.

"It doesn't always have to be personal, it can also be done for something," King said.

It is this last reason that inspired the club to host a benefit sale in mid-December. King hopes that the sale will give club members an opportunity to give back to their community.

"These kids don't have money to give but they can make something," King, a UWRF graduate, said. "The kids can have the feeling they have done something for the community."

Students get together every Tuesday after school for two hours. The first Tuesday they met, King, who student taught in 2009 at Westside Elementary, said the group was "...like Santa's Elves, cranking stuff out," for their sale on Saturday, Dec. 15.

During the next few meetings, the art club will be making ornaments, Mason jar cocoa mixes, cards and more.

The Meyer Middle School art club sale will be held from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the middle school, 230 N. Ninth St.

King thinks that the sale will benefit the Assistance and Resource Center, Inc. (ARC) and the River Falls Community Food Pantry, though she's still looking into where the club's donated proceeds will all go.

The event will feature multiple wares for sale, as well as carolers and a sample of the hot cocoa for sale.

King is looking for parents or art enthusiasts who would like to help out with the club or the sale. She can be contacted at Kelyn.King@rfsd.k12.wi.us
