Mass held for Merle & Lawrence Klug, former business owners, community servants
A double-funeral will take place Wednesday, March 19th at St. Bridget Catholic Church for Merle and Lawrence Klug, longtime River Falls residents who owned and operated the former Walvern Manor & Restaurant and later, the Walvern Supper Club, now the site of Coach's Bar & Grill.
Larry also operated several other businesses and served as mayor of River Falls, board chair for the Town of River Falls and at least one two-year term on the Pierce County Board in the mid- to late 1980s.
Merle earned a degree in elementary education from River Falls Teacher's College and taught at Hudson and St. Croix Central schools. She was also active in local gardening and homemaker clubs.
Following retirement in 1993, the Klugs moved to a lake home in the Spooner area, where they became active in that community with Merle serving on the Washburn County Board and Town of Casey board, and Merle volunteering at the local library, schools and the garden club. The couple then returned to River Falls in 2007, residing in the Collinswood Addition until recently.
Merle died Saturday, March 8th, following a brief illness. Her funeral had to be postponed when Larry's health suddenly declined and he died, March 14th, at the Lutheran Home.
Both were 90 years old.
The family prefers memorials to the River Falls Public Library, Adoray Hospice or the Spooner Garden Club.
A complete obituary for Larry appears in this week's River Falls Journal and on its web site. Merle's obituary appeared in last week's Journal and is also available on this web site.
