Mary "Ethel" McLaughlin, 94

Mary "Ethel" McLaughlin, 94, of River Falls, formerly of Hammond, died Friday, Aug. 15, at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond.

Ethel was born on April 3, 1920, in St. Joseph Township, Wis., the daughter of James and Florence (Hughes) Frawley. She attended local country schools before graduating from Stillwater High School. She would further her education at the River Falls School of Normal where she received her teaching certificate prior to obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Education.

She thoroughly loved elementary teaching and spent the vast majority teaching in River Falls for Greenwood Elementary's 4th grade. "Mrs. McLaughlin" not only taught the ABC's in the classroom, but would frequently take students with her out in the big world to teach them life lessons, such as shopping!

On June 8, 1943, she married her best friend and soul mate, George McLaughlin, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Stillwater. This union would be blessed with four children, James, Mary Jo, Margaret and Nancy.

Ethel embraced life with grace and a witty sense of humor. She loved reading and belonged to a book club. She also loved playing cards, especially euchre and 500. She was an avid sports fan, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Ethel's passion in life was her husband and family. She loved dancing with George to waltzes, polkas, or the fox trot.

She was active in 4-H with her children as well as sporting or school events of her grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to let you know that she was the first St. Croix County Fair Dairy Queen! Furthermore, she was a great baker making her famous banana bread and brownies. She had a grounded faith and was a dedicated member of Hammond Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and their parish women's guild.

Ethel will forever remain in the hearts of her daughters, Mary Jo (Martin) O'Connor of Bethesda, Md., and Nancy (John) Rock of Hammond; son-in-law, Harvey Jones of Roberts; grandchildren, Michael (Sue) O'Connor, Bridget (Greg) Papa, Moira O'Connor, Matthew (Beth) Jones, Katie (Anthony) Seleski, Mark (Kari) Jones, Ellie (Peter) Reineck, Dan Rock, and Natalie (Jason) Kenyon; great-grandchildren, Anna, Olivia, Isabel and Henry Jones, Wyatt, Sofia and Harper Seleski, Clare and Irene Jones, Ryan, Adelaide and Casey O'Connor, Mack and Taylor Papa, Madeline and Raymond Reineck, and Jackson and Abigail Rock.

She joins in heaven her husband, George; children, James McLaughlin and Margaret "Peg" Jones; siblings, Joseph Frawley, Helen (Charlie) Vanda, Edward (Joyce) Frawley, and infant brother, James Frawley.

Mass of Christian Burial for Ethel will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond, with Fr. Jerry Harris officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, as well as one hour prior to the Mass at church on Friday morning. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
