A former groundskeeper at a Catholic cemetery near Green Bay has pleaded innocent to stealing an expensive guitar from a dead man's casket.
Steven Conard, 39, entered his plea in Brown County yesterday to a charge of theft from a corpse. Relatives said Randall Jourdan, who died last month, wanted his $2,000 Fender Telecaster guitar in his coffin with him.
But an employee at the Allouez Catholic Cemetery had overheard Conard saying he wanted the guitar and that it was too valuable to be buried with the owner. When the employee looked in the casket the next day, the guitar was gone and Conard was soon arrested.
His attorney told a judge he expects the case to be resolved with a plea deal, and a status conference in the case is set for Nov. 28.
