Madison Area Technical College receives grant to help vets transition to civilian life
As colleges attract more veterans, Madison Area Technical College is using a new grant to help returning vets make the transition to civilian life.
The American Council on Education and the WalMart Foundation gave the school a $100,000 Success for Veterans grant.
Michael Shumway, the advisor at MATC's Vets for Vets club, says they're expanding their services to help veteran students ease the stress brought on by family or money problems.
Shumway says his group is also getting specialized tutors and study groups and part of their outreach involves talking to vets with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Madison Area Technical College president Bettsey Barhorst says the number of student veterans at her campus has almost doubled in recent years.
It now has the state's third-largest veteran enrollment, behind University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Barhorst expects the state's new GI Bill to add about 500 veteran students at her campus.
