Lowered flag honors Korean War solider
Governor Scott Walker issued an order for flags in the state to fly at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Monday, Oct.8 as a mark of respect for Private First Class Arthur W. Hopfensperger of Appleton, who was killed in action during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea on Nov. 28, 1950.
The order says U.S. forces were involved in heavy combat and in some cases were unable to retrieve their fallen comrades, among them Hopfensperger. He joined the service at age 17 and made the ultimate sacrifice while defending freedom and democracy.
His remains were "accounted for" on Sept. 12, 2012 and returned home Oct. 5. A graveside service with full military honors will be held Oct. 8
Hopfensperger was a member of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry. Click here to see his obituary: www.hopfensbpergerobit.com.
