Recently I've heard more from the NRA than ever before.
Some of these gun advocates seem sincerely concerned for the safety of our children. Their arguments for arming security people in the schools are quite rational.
The problem is, this issue is too complicated to be dealt with that way.
Killers are seldom rational. The gun culture rises from feelings and ideas that are not rational, and we cannot reason our way out of it.
Men who rely on reason to the exclusion of rampant emotions, especially fear, cannot solve the problem of violence.
Turning the words of the NRA against them, I say: The only thing that can stop a bad man with a gun is an army of good citizens with good ideas such as courage, responsibility, and compassion. Not more guns.
Instead, we need first-class mental health care and security people armed with love.
