Letter: Hurray for bridge, Ron Kind and for bipartisanship

Email

Growing up in Houlton, complaints about the nearby lift bridge were common in our household since my parents used the bridge each day to go to work.

Because of this, I was pleased when the U.S. House passed legislation allowing plans for construction of a new St. Croix River bridge to progress.

The current lift bridge has been an ongoing problem for nearly 30 years, often slowing traffic to a crawl and closing for costly repairs.

Starting in high school, whenever I had the opportunity to speak to my elected officials, I always asked about a new bridge for the St. Croix River.

The most consistent support for the project came from U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, who has been working for over a decade to bring a new bridge to the region.

Kind recognizes the need for this bridge and the impact it will have on the local community, helping to create thousands of jobs in Wisconsin and Minnesota while improving local infrastructure.

I would like to thank Ron Kind and our other elected officials for all their work in advocating for the bridge and their continued support of small-town communities.

With the current state of partisanship in government, agreement is rare.

The fact that this new bridge received bipartisan support in both the House and Senate shows that legislators on both sides of the aisle understand how vital this new bridge is to revitalizing the region and moving transportation in the St. Croix River valley into the modern age.
