Leona M. Elden, 84

Leona M. Elden, age 84, of Clear Lake, Wis., passed away early on Sunday morning at her home on April 25, 2010.

Leona Marien Elden was born on Oct. 20, 1925, in River Falls, Wis., the daughter of Herman and Pauline (Lubich) VonKuster. She grew up in the River Falls area and attended River Falls schools. Leona's family moved to Roberts, Wis., during her high school days and she graduated from Roberts High School in 1943. She then attended Teacher's College in River Falls, graduated, and began teaching school in Clear Lake. Leona was married to Leon H. Elden on July 7, 1949, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in River Falls. They made their home in Clear Lake and together raised six children: Tom, Steve, Eddie, Jane, Mary, and Julie.

Over the years, Leona was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, serving with St. John's Guild and teaching first grade CCD classes there for many years. In her spare time, Leona loved to travel, going to concerts and plays, and enjoyed canning and sewing. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, visiting with friends and relatives and attending reunions. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her son, Eddie Elden; daughter, Mary Brusletten; and her parents Herman and Pauline VonKuster.

Survived by husband, Leon Elden, Clear Lake; sons and daughters, Tom Elden, Vadnais Heights, Minn., Steve (Laura) Elden, Ft. Wayne, Ind., Jane (Steve) Thompson, Baldwin, Wis., Julie (Mike) Novak, Amery, Wis.; son-in-law, Lorne Brusletten, Clear Lake; grandchildren, David and Jonathon Elden, Troy (Veronica) Thompson, Jennifer (Donn) O'Malley, Christopher, Tommy, and Katie Thompson, Elliott, Courteney, Huston, and Madison Brusletten, Matthew, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Joseph, Maria, Julia, Michael, Claire, and Peter Novak; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Delilah O'Malley, C'aira and Kaitlyn Thompson; cousins, family, and friends.

Funeral service at St. John's Catholic Church in Clear Lake was at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29. Celebrant: Fr. Leonard Fraher. Music by Laura Mara, Lois Burri, Abbi Bennett, Veronica Thompson, and Jan Hanson. Casketbearers: Tommy Thompson, Troy Thompson, Jon Elden, Matt Novak, Nick Novak, Elliott Brusletten, TJ Cogbill, and Jeff Cogbill. Honorary casketbearers: Chris Thompson and David Elden. Interment at the Clear Lake Cemetery

Scheuermann-Hammer Funeral Home in Clear Lake is handling the arrangements.
