Leona A. Beskar, 93

Leona Ann Beskar, 93, of Prescott, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at her home.

Leona was born on Nov. 22, 1915, in the town of White Bear Lake, Minn., the daughter of Philip and Louise (Kohler) Buberl.

She was a graduate of White Bear Lake High School. Leona was a White Bear girl, who met, and later married a Big River farmer, Leo J. Beskar.

Leona was the founder of the Big River Hustlers 4-H club and long-time 4-H leader. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society, and current member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. As a member of St. Joseph's Stitchers she was recognized for making over 100 baptismal baby blankets. Leona was a member of Prescott's Club 60 and the Prescott Nursing & Rehabilitation Community Auxiliary. In 2007 Leona was recognized as one of Pierce County's most admired senior citizens.

In her off time she enjoyed gardening, playing cards, reading, dancing and crocheting.

Leona is survived by her six children: Sr. Anita Beskar, F.S.P.A. of Arbor Vitae, Norman Beskar of Prescott, Leonard (Judith) Beskar of Prescott, Herbert (Cecily) Beskar of Roanoke, Va., Mary Louise (Hugh) McDonald of Webster, and Leo A. (Donna) Beskar of River Falls; 23 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Leo J. Beskar; one great-grandson, Jack; her parents; one sister, and six brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prescott with Fr. Ed Shuttleworth officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Big River.

Pallbearers were Leona's grandsons: David Beskar, Sean McDonald, Scott McDonald, Paul Beskar, Joel Beskar, and Justin Beskar. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Beskar and Miguel Beskar, also Leona's grandsons.
