Gov. Jim Doyle has proclaimed Sept. 8, 2009 Literacy Awareness Day.
In the proclamation, Doyle recognizes the thousands of volunteers who "help their neighbors to improve literacy and English proficiency skills at community-based organizations, technical colleges and libraries in the state of Wisconsin every year."
Literacy organizations throughout the state will host various events in recognition of International Literacy Day.
Glenwood City-based West CAP Literacy and Skills Enhancement Program will celebrate this special day by recognizing their tutors and learners and promoting literacy for all.
Supported by Verizon's "Check Into Literacy" program and Wisconsin Literacy, a literacy display and tutor information booth will be at the River Falls Public Library from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Anyone interested in becoming a tutor or learner may sign up at the booth.
