Kathleen 'Katie' Hawkins, 81
Kathleen "Katie" Hyde Hawkins, 81, passed away on May 13 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston.
Katie was born in Kinnickinnic, St. Croix County, Wis., on Oct. 25, 1931, to parents John and Gertrude Hyde. She attended River Falls High School. Following her graduation, she worked as a secretary in St. Paul, Minn. She married Louis Vincent Hawkins on May 22, 1954. They had eight children and lived in Rochester, N.Y.; Bismarck, N.D.; Urbandale, Iowa; and Marion, Iowa, before settling in Johnston, Iowa, in 1972.
Katie was a busy homemaker and also worked at Johnston Community Schools. She retired from her secretarial position in 1999 with over 20 years of service. She continued to enjoy working as a nanny for several families in the Des Moines area. She was an avid letter writer and corresponded with many, many friends and family. Her pumpkin bread was famous among her children, grandchildren, and other lucky recipients. Traveling to visit family and friends was a favorite hobby. She also enjoyed socializing regularly with her many good friends, whom she held very dear.
Katie is survived by her children: Terry Hawkins (Kim), Platte City, Mo.; Mark Hawkins (Kayla), Winterset, Iowa.; Dan Hawkins (Cheryl), Monument, Colo.; Sheila Trowbridge (Willie), Breckenridge, Colo.; Patti Bowers (Eddie), Frisco, Colo.; Shawn Hawkins (Rhonda), Shawnee, Kan.; Lisa Sorensen (Eric), Oak Park, Ill.; Tim Hawkins (Diana), Ankeny, Iowa; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donald "Bud" Hyde; her sister, Donna Foster; and her grandson Dalton Hawkins.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church in Des Moines. There will be a graveside service at St. Bridget's Cemetery in River Falls on Friday.
