James Slocum, 87
James H. "Jim" "Sloc" Slocum, age 87, of River Falls, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born June 7, 1922, in Ellsworth, son of Berlin and Edna Pearl (Cook) Slocum. James went to school in Ellsworth. He then joined the Army Air Force in April of 1943 and remained in service until being honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1946. After service, James went into the floor covering business for 14 years. On Sept. 27, 1948, he married Betty L. Hendrickson at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. In 1946, he started Jim Slocum's Floor Service in River Falls and worked there until 1960. James then worked at the Independent Service Station until November of 1977 when he retired due to health reasons.
James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty; three daughters, Sharon (Loren) Hanvelt, Cindy (Larry) Testa, and Connie (Dennis) McAleavey, all from River Falls; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Hudalla; and further survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors provided by the River Falls American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Cashman-Hill Funeral Home and again on Monday one hour prior to the memorial service at church.
