James Rupert, 77
James Davis Rupert, age 77, of River Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Region's Hospital in St. Paul following an apparent stroke.
James was born on Sept. 17, 1932, in River Falls, to George and Lillian Rupert. He graduated from River Falls High School and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted in the armed forces where he proudly served in the United States Army from 1957 until 1959. On June 23, 1962, he was united in marriage to Alberta L. Luke at St. John's Episcopal Church in Eveleth, Minn. To this union, children Anne, Michael, and Jeffrey were blessed. He furthered his education by receiving his master's degree from the University Of Minnesota. He taught foreign languages in Marion, Wis., as well as Coleraine and Austin, Minn. He became a professor at the University of Wisconsin, teaching foreign languages from 1968 until his retirement in 1994.
In addition to his passion for foreign languages, he lived his lifelong dream of building a home on the St. Croix River. He enjoyed traveling, especially ten times to Norway to study Norwegian and to pursue his family history and genealogy. Over the years, camping with his family and photography, as they went along, gave him great pleasure. He enjoyed classical music, the pipe organ, and played the accordion in a polka band earlier in life.
James will fondly be remembered by his wife of 47 years, Alberta, daughter, Anne (Mark) Lamps and their children, Joseph, Christopher, and Maria; sons, Michael (April) Rupert, Jeffrey Rupert; and special cousin, Sharon Waight.
Funeral Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hudson. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson. Memorials preferred.
