The Pierce County Health Department reports the state Center for Disease Control has received a number of reports of severe respiratory illness among young and middle-aged adults, many of whom were infected with influenza A virus from November through December.

Many required hospitalization and some fatalities have also been reported.

While it is not possible to predict which influenza viruses will predominate during the entire 2013-14 influenza season, pH1N1 has been the predominant circulating virus so far. For the 2013-14 season, if pH1N1 virus continues to circulate widely, illness that disproportionately affects young and middle-aged adults may occur.

Pierce County Health Department and the CDC encourages all persons 6 months of age and older who have not yet received a flu shot this season to be vaccinated. Pierce County Health Department has flu shots available for all ages.

Call the Health Department to schedule an appointment today at 715-273-6755. Children 18 years and younger can get a flu shot at no charge. Adult shots are $30 and we have high-dose available for those 65 years and older.  We do bill some Medicare providers; please call the Health Department for more information.
