Hwy. 35 motorists: Get ready for lane closures

Snow and cold have idled machinery and work at the new Hwy. 35N. overpass at Radio Road, but not for much longer. The warmth and melting brings the project out of hibernation staring Monday, March 17. (River Falls Journal photo by Phil Pfuehler.)

Starting Monday, March 17, Lunda Construction will begin decking on the partly completed bridge over Hwy. 35N and Radio Road.

Said regional Department of Transportation engineer Wendy Maves: “They will be constructing the forms that will support the concrete for the bridge deck until the concrete gains the proper strength.  While they are doing this there will be single-lane closures during the day.

“The lane closures will be for the lane over which the contractor is working. While they are careful, sometimes things will fall to the ground and we wouldn’t want to hit a vehicle.”

Maves said the lane closures will likely begin Tuesday, March 18.

At a recent meeting the contractor indicated workers would probably make a traffic switch midday while working across the bridge.

“It is anticipated that there would be lane closures on Wednesday as well,” Maves said. “Once the decking is in place, there shouldn’t be a need for any lane closures until they pour the bridge deck, which would be a couple of weeks after that.”

More highway lane closures will follow during ramp construction and when concrete is poured for the bridge.

The bridge over Hwy. 35 from Radio Road to Chapman Drive in the town of Troy should be completed by the end of April.

Roundabouts, ramps, lighting and more on both sides should be done by mid-July. The entire project is scheduled for an Aug. 1 finish.
