Howard G. Larson, 95
Howard G. Larson, age 95, passed away at home June 26.
He was born Dec. 5, 1918, to Edwin and Martha Larson in Cushing, Wis. He married Doris Henrietta DeRoy on May 21, 1942, and they enjoyed 68 years together before Doris preceded him in death.
In addition, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loell Larson; and sister, Dorothy and her husband, James Smith; brother-in-law, Paul DeRoy (Marge) and step brother-in-law, Kenneth Klanderman.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Jon Larson (Diane), Steven Larson (Cathy), Janet Williams (Marc), and Mark Larson (Karen); eleven grandchildren, and their spouses, Emily, Abigail (Danny), Brian, Julie (Brian), Andrew, Alyson, Christiana (Eric), Jenny, Kara, Heather, and Sam Larson; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Charlotte Larson; step sister-in-law, Ruth Klanderman; niece, Nancy DeRoy and his other loved nieces and nephews.
Howard served in World War II as a surgical technician in the army stationed in England and France from 1942 through 1946. He was extremely proud of his service and the contribution of U.S. servicemen and women to freedom in Europe.
He was proud to act as a resident expert for Inver Hills Community College student trip to sites of World War II on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. In addition, he was extremely pleased to have been invited to accompany his grandson-in-law to visit the World War II Monument as part of an Honor Flight in 2012.
Howard is remembered as the boss and manager of Erickson's (Family Fresh) supermarket in River Falls. He was recognized as a community leader serving in a variety of roles including scout leader, church council, and the senior citizen housing authority.
His favorite role, however, was being father and grandfather. Howard was the instigator of many an adventure that included canoeing, camping, climbing, hiking and exploring. He could be counted on for donuts and campfires. Howard will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Memorial service 11 a.m. Friday, August 1, with visitation one hour prior to the service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7600 Cahill Ave., Inver Grove Heights. Interment Acacia Park Cemetery.
