Herum a star at Miller Park
Marty Herum of River Falls snapped a 10-10 tie with a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to give the North team a 12-10 victory over the South in the 39th annual Wisconsin American Legion All-Star Game at Miller Park in Milwaukee Sunday.
Herum, representing Fletcher-Pechacek Post 121 in River Falls, finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored. He entered the game in the fifth inning to play third base, and an inning later singled in a run and scored to ignite a four-run inning that allowed the North top come back from a 10-6 deficit and tie the score, 10-10.
With the score still tied, 10-10, in the top of the ninth, Herum stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and singled in a pair of runs to give the North a 12-10 lead.
"Marty is a very respected player around the state of Wisconsin," his high school and Legion coach Ryan Bishop said. "It was great to see him out there with the best of the best in Wisconsin and represent River Falls with pride."
The all-star game was played at Miller Park following the Milwaukee Brewers' 11-6 victory over the Houston Astros. Each player was introduced on the field before the major league game.
Herum is just the fourth player from River Falls to represent Fletcher-Pechacek Post 121 at the Wisconsin American Legion All-Star Game. Travis Saumer played in the game in 1999, Ryan Gilbertson in 2005 and Adam Stuessel in 2006.
River Falls' pitcher JP Feyereisen was named to the Wisconsin AA State All-Tournament Team for his one-hit shutout over Milton in the first round of the state tournament July 30.
Feyereisen had 10 strikeouts in the game to lead Post 121 to its first-ever state tournament victory.
"Tournament directors told me they thought JP had the best pitching performance of the entire state tournament," Bishop said. "JP has really improved his pitching this summer, and that was a great way to culminate a summer of hard work and sweat."
