Helen Wiger, 93
Helen Marie Wiger, age 93, of River Falls, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the River Falls Area Hospital.
Helen was born on Nov. 27, 1916, in Preston, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Carlson) Christiansen.
She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in music education. She began teaching in Waupan, Wis. at the age of 19, also teaching in Glenwood City, Wis., and River Falls. She completed a second bachelor's degree in the 1950s in elementary education and taught third grade at the Greenwood Elementary School, retiring in 1979 after nearly 40 years as a teacher.
She married Burr Wiger on June 1, 1946. He passed away in 1996, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Helen was a member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church, Ezekiel Lutheran Women, River Falls Area Hospital Auxiliary, and River Falls Retired Teachers Assoc.
Helen is survived by her three sons, Chris Wiger, of Denver, Colo., Kurt Wiger, Plymouth, Minn., Cary (Jim Hesselman) Wiger, New Albany, Ind.; one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Cibuzar, Brainerd, Minn. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and over four generations of River Falls third graders, and close family friends, Paul Haugland and Theresa Jonas.
Her husband, Burr; parents; brothers, Carl and Harold; and sisters, Eleanor and Bernice, preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Helen will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, River Falls. Rev. Jean Gfall, Rev. Mark Hall and Rev. John Henning will officiate. Friends and family are invited to call at the church from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials are preferred to Ezekiel Lutheran Church, and the Courage Center in Golden Valley, Minn.
