Group president makes pitch for animal adoption center
Sharon Elliott, St. Croix Animal Friends president, will appear before the Kinnickinnic Town Board Tuesday night to talk about a proposed animal adoption center to be located in that town. The group has a 40-acre site picked out, and is looking for support from the town and then getting a special use permit from St. Croix County.
Elliott said the land purchase will only take place if the county grants a permit. She said the acreage in Kinnickinnic would have a large buffer zone between an animal adoption center and nearby residential homeowners.
Once a land purchase is made, Elliott said St. Croix Animal Friends will conduct a major fundraiser to get the facility built. The group has enough money now to buy the land.
Elliott said she's optimistic that the project is a good one and will be accepted.
St. Croix Animal Friends has a paid membership of roughly 250.
The group has been trying to set up a new animal adoption center for stray cats and dogs since the Pierce County Humane Society's animal shelter in the town of River Falls closed more than two years ago.
That Humane Society shelter was forcibly shut down by the county because of crowding and sanitary violations.
The Tuesday, Dec. 1, town of Kinnickinnic board meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall, 1271 County Road J, at the junction with County Road JJ.
