Downtown Main Street in River Falls will transform from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, into a festival-like atmosphere celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Events will include a potato-soup cookoff, poker walk and medallion hunt that lead up to the day's featured event: Bed races up and down Main Street beginning at 3 p.m.

Note that both sides of Main Street are scheduled to be closed 2-6 p.m. from Maple Street to Walnut Street, as well as East Elm Street from the alley to Main Street.

Spectators line the streets and median to watch five-person teams race custom-made beds.

One person rides on the bed and four people push it. To make the races more challenging, team members are sometimes required to "multitask" as they race.

An open-container exception applies 1-6 p.m. only along Main Street. People may buy a special cup then carry their beverage within the designated spaces during celebration hours.

Whichever treasure seeker finds the "pot o' gold" medallion wins $200 in Chamber of Commerce checks. Hunters will find clues in Veterans Park starting at noon.

About 20 businesses will offer potato soup samples. Tasters vote to pick a winner and by voting, also enter into a raffle-prize drawing.

Card players can play a progressive hand in the pub poker walk and win a prize if their ending hand is highest. Get a card from each participating business then compare hands at 4 p.m. inside Mel's Midtowner, 111 S. Main St.
