Golfers win first BRC match
After being limited to hitting balls off a net into a screen at Meyer Middle School all month, the 2013 Wildcat boys' golf team hit the ground running, playing a total of 63 holes in five days, including a first-place finish at the first Big Rivers Conference match of the season.
The Cats hosted the match at Clifton Hollow April 25, and with patches of snow still lingering in the sand traps and under trees, put together a first place team score of 153 to edge Eau Claire Memorial by two strokes.
River Falls placed fifth at the 36-hole, two-day Wayzata Invitational last Friday and Saturday, before tying Eau Claire Memorial for first at the 18-hole Hudson Invitational this past Monday at Troy Burne.
The action continued with a 9-hole BRC match at Lake Wissota Golf Course this past Tuesday. This Friday, May 3, the Cats travel to the 18-hole Hayward Invitational.
Head coach Matt Garber said he likes what he's seen from the Cats so far.
"We have five very good players on this team, and our expectations match that," he said.
River Falls had four players finish in the top ten at its season-opener last Thursday at Clifton Hollow. Garrett Loomis tied Eau Claire Memorial's Ben Johnson for medalist honors with a score of 35 and Mike Xiong tied for third with a 38, while Blake Heimen and Holden Ohlsen tied for seventh with scores of 40.
Over the weekend at Wayzata, Loomis shot a two-day total of 149 to tie for fifth place as the Cats finished sixth at the Wayzata Invite. Loomis and Joe Bodahl each carded scores of 72 Saturday to help the Cats finish with a two-day total of 308.
This past Monday at Troy Burne, Xiong and Loomis each carded rounds of 76 as the Cats and Old Abes tied for first with team totals of 314. Bodahl finished with an 80 and Heimen carded an 82 while Ohlsen finished with 84.
