A Hudson man is organizing a golf tournament to raise funds for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Scott J. Nelson, a captain with the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport Fire Department, is hoping to enlist community support for the cause.

One hundred fourteen firefighters died in the line of duty across the United States in 2008, Nelson says. "It can happen anywhere."

Congress created the Fallen Firefighters Foundation, but left it to do its own fundraising.

"Our mission is to honor and remember America's fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives," Nelson says.

He was recruited to organize a tournament for western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota while attending a training session at the National Fire Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The St. Croix Valley National Fallen Firefighters Golf Tournament will take place Friday, June 12, at Kilkarney Hills Golf Club on the north side of River Falls.

The fee to play in the tournament is $125. The price covers the round of golf, use of a cart, lunch, dinner, refreshments and awards.

Sponsorship packages start at $250. At that price a business gets a sign at a green or tee and an advertisement in the event program. It also covers the greens fee, food and refreshments for one golfer.

A $2,500 gold sponsorship provides golf for two foursomes in addition to the advertising package.

There are also sponsorship packages priced at $375 and $1,250.

The sponsorship and golf packages can be viewed at the Web site www.firehero.org. Look for the Western Wisconsin/Eastern Minnesota link.
