Girls run, vault to 2nd in first meet of season
Senior Riley Claude set a new indoor school record in the pole vault and senior Paige Skorseth set a new school mark in the 3200 meter run to lead the Wildcat girls to a second place finish in the 14-team large School Division at the season-opening Northern Badger Track and Field Classic March 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.
Hudson won the team title with a total of 81 points followed by River Falls with 60.5. Anoka, Minn. was third with 58.5 and Osceola finished fourth with 46 while La Crosse Central placed fifth with 44.5.
Claude cleared 10-feet, 6-inches to win the pole vault completion by a full foot, while Skorseth finished second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 17.56 seconds.
Junior Karlie Place scored points in three different events to boost the Cats' team score, finishing second in the triple jump with a distance of 34-6, third in the long jump with a leap of 15-9.25, and third in the pole vault with a height of 9-6.
Amelia Kjos earned points in two different events, finishing second in the 400 meter dash in 1:03.61, less than a half-second behind Milwaukee Hamilton's Amber Williams, and placing sixth in the 200 meter dash in 27.79 seconds. Annie Frisbie contributed a fifth place time of 5:39.75 in the 1600 meter run, while Alison Casey finished 13th in 6:06.67.
Freshman Veronica Naranjo cleared 4-10 in the high jump to tie for seventh place while Annie Wagner was seventh in the long jump at 14-10.75 and 14th in the triple jump at 29-10. Hannah Brager just missed scoring in the high jump with a ninth place leap of 4-8.
Alexandra Ronnestrand was the Cats' highest finisher in the shot put, placing ninth with a throw of 31-2, while Karly Murphy finished 12th at 27-10.
Shayna Ziriax finished 12th in the 800 meter run in 2:46.68, and Courtney Kempf placed 14th in the 400 with a time of 1:11.22, while Morgan Kennealy took 16th in the 200 in 30.3 seconds.
Next up for the Wildcats is the All-American Invitational at UW-River Falls' Knowles Center, Saturday, April 6, beginning at 10 a.m.
