Girls kick Osceola in soccer opener
Wildcat girls' soccer coach Steph Nelson was pleased with her team's 6-0 season-opening win over Osceola April 9 at Wildcat Field. Not thrilled, but still pleased.
"It was an OK first game," she said. "Our touch wasn't quite there and we didn't possess the ball quite as much as I would have liked, but we got to see a lot of different people at different positions and we had some really great ideas."
The Cats scored the only goal they would need off the foot of Mariah Kaiser in the first half, assisted by Ella Bump, the first of three assists for Bump in the game.
Ellise Heiman made it a 2-0 game with an unassisted goal before Bump found the back of the net, assisted by Katie Berndt, to make the score 3-0.
Bump assisted on the Wildcats' next two goals -- the first by Sarah Vitale and the second by Bailey LaPoint -- to extend the Wildcat lead to 5-0 before Jacki Nelson finished the scoring with an unassisted goal to make the final 6-0.
Bump, Vitale and Tara Frey all return for the Cats after earning All-Big Rivers Conference recognition last year. Vitale was a first-team All-BRC selection and Frey made second team while Bump received honorable mention.
Nelson said once the new players and veterans start to blend, she expects the team to be a contender in the BRC this season.
"Once everything gets back into motion, we should be one of the teams to beat," she said.
The Wildcats host Superior, New Richmond and Somerset at the River Falls Quad April 17, with the first games scheduled for 10 a.m.
