Funk band debuts album
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

The Shoeless Revolution, a Minneapolis group that promises high energy funk music, will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the UW-River Falls Center Mall.

The free outdoor show, open to all, will promote the release of the group's debut album, "Speak Up."

"Whether it be an up-tempo funk or a laid-back groove, we want to feel good playing it and at the same time bring something new to the listener's ear," said drummer and vocalist Reed Grimm.

All seven members of Shoeless Revolution are classically trained musicians. They say their background in jazz and classical styles only adds to their soulful, groovy and sometimes quirky originality. The band members have played many different styles together in several other bands and contexts.

Grimm, the son of Colleen Raye and the late Steve Grimm, is a 2003 graduate of Ellsworth High School.

After high school, he attended UW-La Crosse where he earned a degree in music, percussion performance.

"That's where all the guys in the band met," said Grimm.

Ben Peterson, who studied jazz performance at UW-La Crosse, is a 2002 graduate of Ellsworth High School. Peterson, the son of Tom and Carol Peterson, plays bass.

Grimm gives a lot of credit for his and Peterson's artistic paths to Harvey Halpaus, who taught concert band and jazz band at Ellsworth Middle School and jazz band at the high school.

"He's inspirational. He's great. He definitely made us feel the music," said Grimm.

Shoeless Revolution focuses on bringing new music, including both original pieces and unique covers, to fans.

With the added kick of a three-piece horn section and a cross-pollination of musical styles, the Shoeless Revolution delivers an upbeat performance that combines funk, reggae and rock - without footwear.
