Funeral set for decorated Spring Valley soldier
The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, for a Spring Valley Army paratrooper found dead at his home on Fort Bragg, N.C., the morning of Feb. 2.
Pfc. Joshua Gokey, 29, died unexpectedly from medical complications following surgery, according to his obituary on the Website of Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley.
He was an infantryman assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, according to a release from the 82nd Airborne Division.
Gokey joined the Army in March 2011 and completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga., before he was assigned to the 82nd, the release said.
His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Rae Gokey of Fort Bragg, and his parents, William and Anita Gokey of Spring Valley.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley. The funeral, with full military honors, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, Sacred Heart.
According to his obituary, Gokey's family is planning a tribute in the form of an eagle statue and requests that memorials be given to help with that project.
