Five Falcons win WIAC titles track and field

UW-River Falls' Becca Jordahl won two individual championships, and Vicki Cooper, Krista Hasselquist, Becky Ponick and Charlie Sowa all won one at the WIAC Track and Field Championships last weekend at UW-Eau Claire.

Jordahl and Cooper both earned additional honors after the meet. Jordahl was named the Track Athlete of the Meet and Cooper was named the Field Athlete of the Meet.

On Friday Jordahl won the 10,000-meter run in 36 minutes, 53.43 seconds and came back Saturday to win the 5,000-meter run in 17:01.58, a new UW-RF record. The old record was 17.41.24 set by Sandy Cryer in 1982.

Cooper won the shot put title with a throw of 44 feet, 11 ¾ inches and finished third in the discus with a throw of 145-5. On Friday she placed seventh in the hammer throw.

Hasselquist won the discus title with a throw of 154-6. That broke her old record of 148-10 set last year. Hasselquist also placed third in the shot with a throw of 41-11 1/2. On Friday, Ponick won the javelin with a throw of 113-1 while Sowa led the men by winning the javelin competition with a throw of 164-10.

Brittany Smith placed second in the heptathlon with 4,223 points. She finished just two points out of a tie for first place. Ponick placed sixth with 3,868 points.

Jessica Reed placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in 15.29 seconds and Smith placed sixth with a time of 15.43 while Shannon Zweifel placed third in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.65.

On the men's side, Alex Wahlberg placed second in the decathlon with 5,926 points and Bruce Baillargeon was sixth with 5,787.

Jason Phillippi had a great race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing second with a time of 9:26.14.

The Falcon women placed fourth in the final team standings. UW-La Crosse won the team title with 192 points followed by UW-Eau Claire (158.5), UW-Oshkosh (140.5), UW-RF (118), UW-Stevens Point (77), UW-Stout (51), UW-Platteville (50), UW-Whitewater (46) and UW-Superior (24).

The Falcon men placed seventh with 53 points. La Crosse won the team title with 191.5 points followed by Stevens Point (137.5), Oshkosh (134.5), Whitewater (129), Platteville (87), Eau Claire (67.5), River Falls (53), Stout (42) and Superior (16).
