Fish hold off River Rats
All nine batters in the Fighting Fish lineup scored a run and the Fish pounded out 15 hits, including four by third baseman Nathan Brom, as River Falls defeated the Hudson River Rats, 9-7, in a St. Croix Valley Baseball League game Sunday at the high school field.
Brom went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Fish hit parade and Ryan Gilbertson and Rick Wells shut down the River Rats over the final two innings to preserve the win as the Fish improved to 2-1 in SCVBL play.
River Falls will travel to Ellsworth to face the Hubbers Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and visit the Bay City Bombers Saturday at 1 p.m. before hosting the St. Croix Falls River Bandits Sunday.
The Fish scored three runs in the bottom of the first Sunday to snap a 25-inning scoreless streak dating back to the Plum City Memorial Day Tournament.
"We'd been struggling to score runs; we hadn't had an earned run in about two weeks, so that was a huge win for us," Fish player-manager Josh Eidem said.
The Fish were coming off back-to-back shutout losses to Osceola and Hastings (Minn.) earlier in the week. The Braves handed the Fish their first SCVBL loss, 7-0, last Wednesday in Osceola while Hastings defeated River Falls, 5-0, in a non-league game Friday night.
"We are only 3-6 overall, but 2-1 in the SCVBL," Eidem noted. "Part of our overall record, I think, reflects some really good competition we've faced in our non-league schedule, including the 5-0 loss to Hastings Friday night."
In addition to Brom's big day at the plate Sunday, Sam Giliuson went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Trevor Gutting had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a run while Clint Kempf was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Seth Bugar started on the mound and worked five innings to get the win. Rick Meier was replaced by Gilbertson in the seventh before Wells came in to earn the save in the ninth with two strikeouts and a fly out.
This Sunday's home game against St. Croix Falls is WESTconsin Credit Union Kinni Day at the high school field. The first 40 fans in attendance will receive a free Fighting Fish can cooler courtesy of WESTconsin Credit Union. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
