Falcons win first ever WIAC tourney title
The third time proved to be the charm for the UW-River Falls men's basketball team.
After being swept by UW-Whitewater in the regular season, the Falcons battled back from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Warhawks, 64-58, in the WIAC Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon in Whitewater.
The win gives the Falcons their first-ever WIAC Tournament championship and an automatic berth in this week's NCAA Division III National Tournament.
UWRF, now 20-7 on the season, lost both regular season games to the Warhawks, including a last-second, 55-53, decision last Saturday at Karges Center that decided the WIAC championship.
Whitewater entered Sunday's WIAC Tourney title game with a record of 23-3 and ranked No. 8 in the nation. The Warhawks built a 34-26 halftime lead, bolstered by 14 UWRF turnovers.
But UWRF started the second half with a 14-3 run and led by as many as 10 before holding off the Warhawks for the six-point win.
Wade Guerin led the Falcons with 18 points and nine rebounds and Brian Kimble contributed 13 points, five rebounds and three steals while Taylor Peterson came off the bench to finish with nine points.
UWRF's leading scorer during the regular season, Shane Manor, was hampered by a rib injury and foul trouble and finished with eight points, including six in the final 1:38.
The entire NCAA field, including match ups and where games will be played, will be announced on Monday.
