Email

Emmett L. O'Connell, age 82, of Hammond, died on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Emmett was born June 18, 1931, in River Falls, Wis., to parents Ignatius and Francis (Stapleton) O'Connell. Emmett attended school in Hammond and graduated from Hammond High School with the class of 1950. After high school, Emmett worked on the family farm, and in 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably until his discharge in 1955. Upon being discharged, Emmett returned to work at the family farm. On June 23, 1962, Emmett would be united in marriage to Janet Kauphusman. Their union in marriage would be blessed with two sons, Greg and Tom, and over 51 years of love and devotion.

Emmett worked hard around the farm and, for over 18 years, with the St. Croix County Highway Department. Around the farm, Emmett kept things nice and neat and very seldom left machinery outside at night. When not doing farm work on a John Deere, he enjoyed working with his team of Belgian draft horses and pulling his show wagon through all the local parades. Emmett enjoyed the weekly breakfast meetings with his fellow Highway Dept. retirees, having lunch at Shelly's Northside Cafe, and going on countryside drives to check the crops, but he truly treasured his family time: time spent being a loving husband, dad, and grandpa. He will be missed dearly by family and friends alike.

Emmett is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet; his sons, Greg (Luanne) O'Connell and Tom (Nicki) O'Connell; his grandchildren, Jackie, Aaron, and Lucas; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary (Wally) Olien, and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial for Emmett O'Connell will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1265 Ridgeway, Hammond, with Rev. Fr. Jerry Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to Mass at church, and also from 3-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Services have been entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin, Wis., 715-684-3434.
