Early bridgework means road closure
South Wasson Lane between East Cascade Avenue and Cemetery Road will be closed for much if not all of next week due to utility work before summer's bridge replacement.
City Engineer Reid Wronski said a posted detour will be up Monday but may not be enforced until Tuesday. Those who live on the closed stretch of road will be able to reach their homes.
Wronski said the timing is good because of spring break, meaning there should be less traffic on South Wasson Lane with schools closed, including the high school on Cemetery Road.
Sometime in May, a construction project begins to replace and modernize the deteriorating South Wasson Lane bridge. The aim is to finish the new bridge before school starts in fall.
Wronski said Ruzic Construction from Neillsville was the project's low bidder at $754,000.
The reason for next week's road closure: River Falls Municipal Utilities has hired a contractor to build a temporary electric transmission line. The rerouting is needed because the summer bridgework will affect the current distribution line.
An RFMU press release says no outages are expected next week, but adds: "Unexpected interruptions in service are always a possibility."
South Wasson Lane should reopen for traffic after Friday, March 21.
