River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

A downtown River Falls bar has a new name and new owners; Mavericks Corner Saloon, 126 and 128 N. Main St., formerly The Corner Saloon. In its Tuesday, Nov. 26 meeting, the River Falls City Council granted new owners Mike and Becky Kappers a combined “Class B” Liquor and Beer License, with Becky Kappers as agent.

Mike and Becky Kappers, Somerset, are purchasing the bar from previous owner John Peterson. They planned to close on the purchase Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Mike Kappers said Wednesday that he and Becky plan to put in a full kitchen and serve lunch. The menu would include “typical bar food” like burgers and fries.

Mike and Becky Kappers also own Apple River Hideaway Campground and Tubing and Apple River Liquor in Somerset, as well as some Somerset rental properties.

Mike said he and Becky bought the Corner Saloon because they liked the bar, and the area. Mike grew up in Hammond and said he spent a lot of time in River Falls over the years.

“I like the college-town atmosphere, so you have a never-ending supply of customers,” he said. “It’s got a real nice home-type feeling to it. We’re just going to add to what’s inside,” Mike said.

He said he and Becky changed the saloon’s name to Mavericks Corner Saloon in honor of their 2-year-old son Maverick.

Yo-Joe's

Mavericks Corner Saloon isn't the only River Falls Business going through changes.

Yo-Joe’s Frozen Yogurt and Coffee Shoppe owner and co-founder Laurie Levine announced Monday the closing of both the Cottage Grove and River Falls locations, citing the inability to financially break even.

The Cottage Grove location opened in April 2012 followed by the River Falls location in August 2012.
