Douglas A. Hughes, 65

Douglas A. "Doug" Hughes, 65, of Hammond, passed away due to a heart attack on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at United Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born the son of Wendell and Mona "Betty" (Graham) Hughes on March 7, 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Army.

Doug was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Hawkins on Sept. 14, 1966, in Denver, Colo.

They would be blessed with two children, Steven and Stacey.

Doug retired as a quality control manager from Superior Wall manufacturing in 2006. He was a life member of the VFW, enjoyed watching tractor pulls and playing the slots at casinos, but above all, he loved his family, especially being a grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, in 2000; and sisters: Gina and Rosie.

Doug will remain in the hearts of his son, Steven Hughes of Hammond; daughter, Stacey Engel ("Milkman") of Roberts; five grandchildren: Brandon, Brady, McKenzie, Bailey and Stephanie; grand-dog, Diesel; sisters: Patricia (Richard) of Roberts and Wendy (Charlie) of Seattle, Wash.; and extended family and friends.

A private family burial, with military honors by the Hammond VFW, will take place at the Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery.

A memorial gathering for Doug will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin,, which assisted the family with arrangements.
