DNR hosting copper bullet demo Saturday

The public is invited to attend a demonstration at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Hudson Rod, Gun & Archery Club that illustrates the risk of lead contamination from conventional bullets.

Warden Paul Sickman said the department will present a short talk on the potential harmful effects of lead and how lead bullets can contaminate a hunter's meat harvest.

The demonstration will then move to the range, where members of the public will be invited to fire a lead bullet into a device which captures fragments in water-filled, plastic jugs. Copper bullets will also be fired into the same device, showing the lower risk of contamination in that a solid copper bullet remains fully intact and will not fragment like a lead bullet.

The DNR will offer copper bullets to shoot in the following calibers, .243, 30-06, .308 and 7mm.

The range, located at 285 Krattley Lane in North Hudson, is open for public sight-in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10, 16-17. Cost is $3 for members and $7 for non-members. Targets are included with 25-, 50- and 100-yard distances offered -- along with help from member volunteers and complimentary coffee.
