"New Year's Address ... to the Readers of the Journal:
'Twas but a few short years ago,
In these fair valleys wide;
The Indian brave the war-path traced,
And wooed his dusky bride.
But now a fair, white village sits
Beside the flowing stream;
And evening lamps make glad the night,
With friendly, cheering gleam.
