Science teacher Dan Hoffman lead a group of six River Falls students to the Belize rain forest for an ecotourism, biology and ecology view of life there. Students in the group included Mike Page, Erin Meier, Erin Hoffman, Molli Rasmussen, Alyssa Boock and Dani Leake.

Anne Penton of River Falls was cast as Anne Frank for The Phipps Center for the Arts' production of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Grocery specials included t-bone steaks for $4.59, ribeye steaks, $4.99/lb.; Coke products, $4.79/24 pack; sour cream 69 cents/16 oz.; and tortillas, 69 cents/12 oz.

AUG. 27, 1987

Two fractured suspender rods on the swinging footbridge which leads into Glen Park from Cascade Avenue are causing some concern among city officials. The contractor who replaced the old bridge in 1986 at a cost of nearly $100,00 has been contacted.

New elementary teachers in River Falls included Darrell Anderson, Sally Swanson, Nancy Lindquist, Becky Larson, Mary Anderson, Robbye Sitz, Naomi Brandt, Marsha Peterson, Katie Grier, Kathy Kozub, Morena Kelly, Lynn Clausen and Judy Baker.

River Falls brothers Curt and Brent Heit won a combined five area junior golf tournaments this year.

SEPT. 1, 1977

Sarah Jane Wiskerchen, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wiskerchen, who is the reining Wisconsin Shrine Bowl queen, has been selected grand marshal of the 16th annual Shrine Football Day Festival here.

First place winners of the Pony League baseball tournament were the Yankees: Kevin Kealy, Chad Olsen, Troy Larson, Joe Franzmeier, Will Andrle, Chris Rossing, Jonas Bock, Kevin Bruesewitz, Joel Larson, Tim Bredahl, Chris O'Neil, Shane Hemenway and Jim Simone.

The real estate section of the Journal advertised 70 acres with a creek and the works just six miles out and priced at $800 per acre.

AUG, 31, 1967

Three major building permits issued by the Planning Commission were given for an addition to the Moose Lodge, for a new restaurant near the Toby Ailport property, and for a new South Main Standard Station.

Dr. Richard Delorit took over as acting president of Wisconsin State University-River Falls today as Dr. E. H. Kleinpell resigned.

An all-senior backfield was expected to take the field for opening kick-off Friday night at Ramer Field. Included were three-sport lettermen Dennis Malmer at quarterback; right half Frank Cernohous; fullback Tom Weishaar; and left half, Gary Selleck.

50 YEARS AGO

AUG. 29, 1957

An unexpected increase of 153 pupils in the public schools is causing space problems; the two kindergarten sections alone with each have 45 students.

Leading the high school football team through the second week of practice were co-captains Dennis Schultz and Jim Murphy, mainstays in Coach Al Trotalli's line.

Champs of the Pee Wee League this summer were the Tigers: Terry Back, Steve Johnson, Scotty Gaalaas, Jerry Halverson, Tom Price, Richard Berkseth, Richard Kay, Dennis Johnson, Elliott Larson and Wade Larson.

60 YEARS AGO

AUG. 28, 1947

The River Falls Fall Festival, held last weekend, drew large crowds in the evening, but hot weather kept activities practically at a standstill in the afternoon. One of the outstanding attractions was the flower show, held in the First National Bank. The amateur contest drew a list of 21 entries with the Owen Trio taking first place, Audrey Van Wey won second, Eileen Grupe, third, and Marian Massie, fourth.

Otto Henschien advertised a four-room modern apartment for rent on the second floor at 208 S. Fifth St.

70 YEARS AGO

SEPT. 2, 1937

Ed Tronnier's garbage plan, which has been put into operation, will eliminate all the refuse burners in the downtown district.

A disastrous fire struck the Jensen brothers' diary farm two miles west of town, necessitating the combined equipment of the River Falls and Hudson fire departments.

80 YEARS AGO

SEPT. 1, 1927

With the two local theaters, the Princess and the Falls, changing their two-day programs on alternate days, River Falls now has an opportunity of attending a different movie program each evening.

Gerhard Kulstad, who had been operating a shoe store in Gaylord, Minn., the past three years, has purchased the Steward Mercantile Co. shoe department.

A gasoline war was started in Ellsworth when three dealers of that village dropped the price of gas to 16 cents a gallon, while other dealers have kept the price of 19.4 cents -- 5.4 cents above Twin Cities prices.

Petitions have been circulated to change the rural mail route from the new 11 a.m. beginning time to its former 7:30 a.m. time.
